Seemingly like winter: How so? The month is December,

the temperatures are frigid ,

and at times we have snow, although there is not much laying in the fields and meadows
And there is ice in the rivers. Such is winter 2012 in My Wotld in New Brunssick, Canada.
The long yelloed grasses decorate the hillside slopes and meadows.
Feed is provided for the farm animals that are outside that do not find grazing in the fields.

A most beautiful delightful gift I received from my daughter was a small pillow and pillowcase she had made for me out of nature fabric, The fabric is bright and bold with colourful songbirds on it; such as red Cardinals, Blue birds, Blue Jays and Chickadees. She also has given me a swatch of the fabric. She says it is a fabricville piece. I shall go looking for it as oit is a 'must have' beauty that would warm the heart of any birdwatcher.

Our Christmas Cat!

Shakey is our handsome black cat who loves a reason to celebrate a season. He doesn't bother our Christmas tree but hangs around it a lot. Last evening we started wondering, "Where is Shakey"? We called him; "Shakey, where are you?" We knew we hadn't let him outdoors We hadn't seen him for a while?! Suddenly David made a loud noise getting up from the recliner and simultaneously we head a rattling noise under the tree and there he was!!! Shakey had been sleeping in a Christmas bag that we hadn't sealed at the top!

As this is theSanta Season we see that red-coated gift giver everywhere. We have 5 little believers in out family and its exciting to talk with out hopeful grandchildren on the telephone about their expectations. The photo above has ties with our family. The little ceramic Santa that used to wind up and play a Christmas tune is old, as it belonged to my husband's family when he was a little boy and it now has come down through the generations. The wooden, painted Santa was designed and painted by our daughter Riel,http://www.rielnason.com/ she was always a very creative child.

A few years ago I made this Christmas chess set. Every year I enjoy getting the pieces out and setting them up. This year is no different and today I thought I'd share some of the pieces. A monochrome picture style and a 'sepia' tonal quality and I chose a yellow filter setting. I really like the warm, earthy colour that is so characteristic of our fall environment this tome of year. Anything without a snow covering is beautiful to my eyes.

Six little dresses to take to my granddaughter , Molly, who will wear only dresses on these summer days. Their shadows on our lawn inder the clothesline dance merrily in the breeze reminding me of those long ago days when wearing a new dress was a very special occasion.

Butterflies and Fabric

The selvage information on the beautiful butterfly fabric shown above says " Creature comforts butterflies" Isn't it beautiful! I especially like the swallowtail butterflies illustrated on it.
Shown above is a butterfly pillowcase I made for my little granddaughter. I hope she likes butterflies!

Mug Rug

Its bigger than a coaster, but smaller than a place mat. Its a mug rug, similiar to a small quilt.
Its my husband birthday today so I made him this mug rug this morning. As a result of an interest in nature I buy fabric with nature themes as often as I can. These scraps which I used in the mug rug.really fit the purpose well.

A green-themed work in progress for Thursday challenge

This green themed quilt wasn't planned for St. Patrick's Day although the timing for its completion couldn't have been better. Actually its to be a birthday present for a little boy who loves green and playing socceer. I finished piecing it together yesterday and this morning I will pin baste it and start quilting it this afternoon with my sewing machine using the stitch in the ditch quilting method. However it might turn into a tug of war between myself and the sewing machine as the quilt will be bulky. It is 50" x 80" and it is made up of 160 green-themed five inch squares.

Since having posted these photos of my completed green-themed quilt top last week I have pin basted the quilt top and am midway completed the machine quilting. More experience on my part would be a definite asset; however the apparent evidence of my lacking in experience and the resultant tell- tale tracking of my thread lines ( a wobbly wave here, a creative curve there) add to a uniqueness all of its own to the work. Each time I approach the sewing machine I am engaged in a quilt top tug -of- war to see if my contrary project will follow my guidance of a pull and push as the fabric glides under the sewing machine needle, see what I mean by my lacking in experience? I also have a helper, as our cat Shakey seems to love this quilt. He is probably putting lots of cuddles and purrs into it for it is to be a gift to his previous owner, our bilingual grandson, "Bonjour, David, C'est un présent pour vous!"

By the time it is completed this quilt will have lots of sleep experience put into it as it is Shakey's most favourite spot for a nap no matter where I place the quilt in the house;
folded on the dining room table , or spread out on the love seat in the living room.

I like the quilt top too, although I haven't taken any naps on it yet as Shakey has. My favourite portion of it is the top part which holds the deepest and greenest greens. It has wonderful appeal at this time of year as my anticipation of spring is a daily hope and pleasure. The lighter greens which I have used unify the green theme as intended,do not hold as much appeal to me, however the idea of a walk outdoors in a green environment appeals to my dreams of once again enjoying the surroundings of a green world brought about by this present welcome seasonal change.

Shakey has aquired a few more habits related to his quilting interest. His outreached paw can unthread my sewing machine in a second and due to his fascination with my pin cushion I now leave it on top of the refridgerator overnight. If I forget to put it away in a hard- to- reach- location, I will find an empty pin cushion, in the morning surrounded by its pulled out straight pins pins lying on the table top in a circle around the pincushion. Shakey is not too interested in chasing empty thread spools, I suspect that might be as they are freely given to him, offering little temptation. But Shakey is a great cat and is dearly loved. Maybe I should make him a quilt? That might be a good next project and I am sure he would be willing to help!

A delicious treat of little crabapples for Ruby Tuesday

This is the same bird as in my previous post; An almost all white Bohemian Waxwing that I was so lucky to have seen while I was taking pictures of regular Bohemian Waxwings on Thursday of last week.. You can imagine my surprise and delight! !!When I saw this beautiful white creature through my camera lens. The red berries also add so much to the beauty of the picture.

This piece of fabric shown is full of words relating to birds and I think it is wonderful for it touches upon another interest of mine, quilt making. a yellow tea set Valentine's gift for mellow yellow Monday

These photos are of a beautiful old tea set that my husband bought for me for Valentines. We both love old things and antiques. They are definitelyof an old mellow yellow. The age cracks and the fading of some of the colours definitely show age , but the manufactures stamp on the back of the plates is to difficult to read to identify the source. Maybe some of you viewers can identify the patterrn for me. It is an eight piece set including : a teapot, a sugar bowl, a creamer and 5 seven inch plates. Ships at Sea completed quilt

Shown above is my first quilt completed this winter and actuallyit is my first pieced quilt ever other than a doll's quilt with the pattern card trick. I have made quilts before but always have made and followed my own pattern. I have thoroughly enjoyed making this quilt and I have learned a lot!!! I loved searching for and finding different fabrics for the sky and the ocean. My generous, sharing daughter Riel, gave me a lot of fabric pieces. Thanks, Riel. This quilt just happened: beginning with experimenting with making a pieced block in October to taking it to a long arn quilter in November. It has been a voyage of discovery and adventure for me. I loved the entire journey!

I had chose the pattern "ocean froth"( by Anne Bright) at the long arm quilters. The swirling appearance of the pattern seemed to imitate a moving sea that a sailing ship would be sailing upon. I was really verypleased with how it turned out.

I have been working on quilt blocks of the pattern called ships at sea, sometimes it is called sailing ships or the Mayflower. Whatever the naming, these blocks bring back a recall of an early love of history and studies of those early, daring explorers that I was introduced to in grade 5 social studies classes, those many, many years ago. I found the stories thrilling of Marco Polo, Vasco de Gama, Prince Henry the Navigator, Magellan, Balboa, Captain Cook, Columbus,Jacques Cartier, John and Sebastien Cabot. This quilt will celebrate that early love. I didn't consciously choose this pattern, but I had found the block quite easy to piece, when I came upon it in a quilting book and I was enjoying the success of finishing the blocks. When I had accumulated a few I determined to make enough for a twin sized quilt. (24 blocks, each 12 inches square) Then I decided to look for backing fabric showing an old world map. I was really hooked when I found the perfect map fabric shown below. Wow!
The words following between quotation marks were written during the process of quilt making, before its completion.
"Next I found the fabric for sashing which you can see in the photo below of old sailing or clipper ships. "This quilt was meant to be! I am very eager to see it finished." I hope to take it to a long arm quilter today after I finish all ofthe sashing./ Then to put together the backing after which I plan on using the left over map fabric to make a matching pillow case. What an occasion for dreaming that will be: of adventurous explorers and those exciting far away lands that shall be discovered in dreamland. What a wonderful and exciting adventure the making of this quilt has been. " Now the quilt is complete and I am a very happy quilter! I hope you enjoy it!

My Cat's Shadow for shadow shot Sunday

The morning sun was shining very brightly yesterday morning in our living room window projecting my cat's shadow as it sat on a footstool near the window. Another shadow produced from this lovely sunny day was of the metal bird silhouette on top of one of out feeder poles. The bird's shadow looked lovely against the snow.

red blossom and signal light for Ruby Tuesday

Looking out my window this morning this red blossom seems representative of this new month of February. Only 4 weeks now until March! unbelievable! To me red represents February. as its heart month and the month we celebrate Valentines. I had hoped a bird might flyby as I was taking the picture, it would be a redpoll ( appropriate for the meme today, but there were no redpolls in sight. )
For my second Ruby Tuesday offering I spied this RR crossing signal light blinking red yesterday. It seldom has occasion to flash anymore as a train never crosses this crossing these days but it was a little small machine equipped with railroad wheels on it for it could double as a highway vehicle also. But it was great to see its red light flashing as it is a seldom sighting for me.

Winter sunshine quilts for mellow yellow monday

The quilt above I call winter sunshine. It is very yellow as was its purpose in design. It is made of 150, 5 inch squares: The backing of the quilt continues the yellow theme as can be seen below, and a nighttime theme is also introduced with its star covered pattern. Inthe photo above the little dolly quilt is being held in the front.

With a few scraps and bits and pieces left over I cut 30, 4 inch squares to make the little dolly quilt shown above. It is 20 inches by 24". the original and larger winter sunshine quilt I used the same star covered yellow pattern fabric for backing as seen in the photo below.

fabric with touches of red for Ruby Tuesday

Yesterday on my other blog, Nature Tales and Camera Tails,http://naturetales.blogspot.com/ I introduced my ongoing winter project of making a quilt of yellow themed fabric..It consists of 15 horizontal strips, each composed of 10 five inch squares. In total I l have 15 horizontal strips altogether. At the moment I am sewing the horizontal strips together and am getting to the darker fabrics which I have included. My guidelines are that each block must include some yellow. The strip that I just have attached this morning has some blocks with beautiful reds( and of course yellow in it too) in it.

Shakey for Cats On Tuesday

Shakey is our very contented winter cat. He spends most of his daytime finding different places to sleep throughout the day. He seldom goes outdoors although every morning he runs to the door to be let out. but he changes his mind when the cold air hits him or his eyes see the snow outside. We call our old basement his apartmernt where he has his food, water and litter box. He goes to the basement door and meows when he has need to go downstairs.

We still get his name confused with other cats we have had, and find ouselves often calling him, Bravie (Brave was the best cat in the world who was with us for about 20 years), or we call him Thag ot Thaggie. (Pythagorus was a wonderful cat who earned her name from a geometric shape on the bottom of her right leg.) So Shakey often raises his head when we call him Bravie or Thaggie.(We still miss Brave and Pythagorus very much!) Shakey only came to live with us in August when my son and his family and cat came to visit us. They left Shakey behind as they were moving on to Ontario to a rented apartment and their circumstances didn't quite make room for the family cat. Shakey has settled in here quite well and he is now very much a part of our family and living room decor. Shakey's previous family came to visit us at Christmas and all was good. Shakey is happy living with us and has adjusted well. Thursday's Challenge quilt making.

The theme for today's Thursday Challenge of craft fits perfectly with my most recent activities for I have been busy making quilt blocks to assemble together into a twin sized quilt. I have only 4 more blocks to complete until I can start sewing them all together. To see some of my blocks please scroll down to see my previous posts on this project of mine. Yesterday's block included some cute fabric of fish and Octopus, this fabric had been made into a child's pillowcase which I had found at a seconhand store, Value Village. I bought the pillowcase for the fabric.
used to represent the water of the ocean. The finding of fabric is such a fun activity.
Another fun fabric I found to represent water was a fabric with yellow sea turtles which had been made into a baby carrying sling. I bought the sling for the fabric also.that I used in this sailing ship block I had made on Tuesday. I have also enjoyed meeting the challenge of finding different fabric designs to represent the sky as in this yellow starred blue night sky in the above block.

shark infested blue fabric waters for Blue Monday

I have been bitten by the quilting bug. I hope its not related to bed bugs as they are both bed related. I have recently been making a ships at sea quilt blocks and have been focusing mainly on finding a variety of sky related fabrics, but had not been too venturesome in searching out different sea or water fabrics. That is not until my daughter Riel, gave me a sleeve from a man's shirt featuring sharks in turquoise waters which I have used to match my turquoise skies in the above quilt block.. That success sent me off shopping for possible designer fabric made into clothing at a secondhand clothing store( Guy Frenchys) on the weekend. And I found a treasure fabric in the form of a man's bathing suit. Grey sharks in blue water. This was perfect for my project with its colours as the borders around my quilt blocks will be grey!I pieced together a quilt block to use the shark fabric and cut carefully so that a large openmouthed shark was featured in the forefront. .Blue Monday is a meme that hosts photos which highlights the colour of blue. This picture taken in the dark yesterday morning while waiting at the bus stop with my little grandson just seems so appropriate for the theme of this week's photo hunter "dark"! It was also a very foggy morning.

Another sailing ships quilt block

This block I call a Saint John River Wood Boat. Only 10 more blocks to go andthen I will be in a single digit countdown. I will have completed enough blocks for a twin bed size quilt. having 4 blocks horizontally and 6 blocks vertically. I am getting anxious to see all of the colourful blocks put together. It will be quite lovely, I hope.. I want to include a Chinese junk block as I have a piece of lovely red fabric with black Chinese lettering on it.I shall have to find a good picture of a junk's sail to use as a model before creating it.

The black sky, starry night fabric is called Halloween night. My daughter had given me the fabric. The brown fabric I had bought from Janice at the flea market held on Sunday's and the brown for the boat's body, I had bought at Mardens in Scarborough, Portland , Maine. Finding and buying fabric is a joyful pastime. That is on my list for fun things to do on Friday or perhaps maybe tomorrow. Another fun sky fabric I found was this turquoise fabric sky with multi coloured stars., shown below. This fabric Ihad purchased at Fabricville. note: I have since reconstruced the turquoise ship, changing the sails around so that they are positioned them the same as the brown ship above.

I have been very busy the past week making quilt blocks of the pattern called sailing ships or ships at sea. I had bought a new sewing machine recently and being strongly influenced by my quilt maker daughter whose quilt blog is found at:http://www.quispamsisquilter.blogspot.com/ I had been practicing some quilt block patterns. This pattern caught my eye and so far I have completed 12 blocks. I really like my results and find it challenging finding different sky designs to use for each ship block. The fabric I used above I had found in a thrift shop having been made into a pillow cover. I threw the pillow away and washed and cut up the cover as the fabric was so appropriate to my needs. I am half way there making blocks. I plan on making 24 blocks for a twin sized bed quilt. This is block # 12. I want to find some fabric showing an old world antique map, in sepia tones if possible for the backing of the quilt. That will be a challenging search but the theme seems so suitable for an old sailing ships design!
The black fabric with red stars used above for the ship's body is called spirit of the west by Maywood Studio. It is so much fun picking and matching fabrics. The red wavy water was found by my husband among a group of fat quarters for 50 cents each, He also bought me blue waves and green waves. My favourite choice is the red waves, but the green onesblended nicely when I used a green sky fabric with cream coloured stars.

Letters for photo hunt

"Oh My", this week's theme of letters takes me way back to 1965, 64 and 63. When I read this week's theme of 'letters' I knew I could find them. They were in an old Ganongs chocolate box in the middle lefthand drawer of my desk. When they were current they were eagerly awaited treasures. They span many miles from the Atlantic,( Saint John, N. B). to the Pacific (Vancouver, B.C. , and a few years. Also they arrivedat a cabin where I lived in the mountains and at an apartment in Calgary.I moved around a lot when I was a young woman. One year I traveled across Canada three times by train. I remember those trips well, I was so tired!

The writer of these letters has been my husband now for 44 years.

At the date shown above by the post office stamp I was living briefly in Fredericton and Saint John, N.B. David was in Vancouver, B.C. We were married in Vancouver in 1966.

Schoolbus for 'school' photohunter

Nothing speraks of'school to me as much as the image of a schoolbus. I did this painting of a schoolbus several years ago whenI saw this bus to on my way to school each day. I was a teacher and I followed it to school each day. For a few years this painting hung in the office of the high school where my husbans taught. We were a family of teacher's, Today our eldest son is a teacher also as is our daughter-in-law. As a mother of three children, how well I remember those first days of starting school for them and waiting and watching for the schoolbus. Just this week we repeated that ritual of waiting for the scoolbus as we waited and watched while our little grandson, now a kindergarden student get off the bus when he returned home at the end of his schoolday.

nature fabric quilt block for Ruby Tuesday

I bought quite a bit of nature themed fabric last weekend in Maine and have decided to make a nature themed quilt by framing some of the beautiful fabric pictures to make quilt blocks. It has been a battle getting the thread tension adjusted on my sewing machine, but now I think I can manage it and cope with the frustration when it doesn't work correctly. More blocks will be posted as I progress along.This one shown includes a bit of reddish tones including the border fabric(Old English Rose, by Gail Kessler for Andover Fabrics Inc) The nature scene is I think from Timeless Treasures. Some of the fat quarters do not include the selvages which id the pattern and fabric manufacturer. What fun it is getting involved in a project such as this!

Yard Sale Treasures found today

118 men's ties for $5.00! What will I do with them? select a few to give to male family members who still wear ties now and then. I have stashed away a couple of Brooks Brothers and other well known brand names ones for gifts. The one with the price tag of $95 still on it does not appeal to me so I'm hoping my daughter who makes lovely creative quilts can make use of them. I'm sure she would come up with some fantastic creation. I am full of joy over my next purchase shown below. A baby stroller! which I plan on using as a walker when I go to a large flea market next week.The grounds there are large, dusty and uneven underfoot. It will also double as a shopping basket. I have noticed that when at a mall or supermarket, walking is not a chore when I have a shopping cart to push. At times my walking is a bit bothersome, cumbersome and laborious. This problem having developed from a strokeI had about a year and a half ago. I never had to use a walker but recently have been thinking that one might be very helpful. The thing I really like about the stroller I bought today is its large wheels! and it glides like a dream! And the handle is at such a nice height for reaching and pushing.The price was wonderful also, only $6.00. I might even take it for a walk this evening over our rough sidewalk pavement. My husband has suggested that I might put a dolly in it when I go for a walk. As he says," the neighbours will then really think that I have lost it for sure. ;-)"

The meaning of "arret" is easily understandable as to its meaning of" stop" All traffic signs in our province are in both french and english. The writing on the book mobile of New brunswick's public library system says it all , " Be in this place"

Barn building for Remember Whensday

While driving home last Thursday feom a trip to Saint John we saw this old barn being dismantled. I just had to take its picture!. The word" barn raising "came to mind and I started wondering about its beginnings. Had it been a joint effort, maybe the result of a barn raising. The framwork reminded me of a scene from a movie I had once seen where a barn raising took place. I have driven past this location a few times since hoping to catch a glimpse, or maybe a picture of someone working on it up high. I have had no luck yet, but I will keep checking it out.

When looking at the dismantled barn picture this old antique photo above kept coming to my mind. My great grandfather Frederick Otis Pheasant is standing the third from the right in the back row. I don't know the occasion of the photo but Pa Pheasant and many of the men from the community had gathered altogether. When first seeing the photo I had thought barn raising for the evidence of building is seen in the wagon load of lumber in the lower left. But then I thought," no", not a barn for the door opening was too wide. My second guess would be that this building might be a sawmill. Perhaps the men had gathered together to saw some lumber that day and thus the reason for the wagonload of lumber. Or perhaps some building had been going on that day. ? The mystery shall remain in the past as I know of no one who could tell me of the activities of the day whwn this photo was taken.

Yard Sale Treasure

This is an indoor cat made of chalk. I found this old , chalk doorstopper at a yard sale yesterday. It is old as was the seller, he told us he was 95. This chalk find needs a bit of paint touch up and my husband already did some repair to its left front paw by adding some plastic wood to round out the missing end of its paw. I love old door stoppers and

I have another cat[shown above] that I have been using for years. When found they often need a bit of a paint touch up as You never know what treasures you will bring home from a yard sale!

A bookshelf found for Today's Thrifty Treasures

We love yard slaes and eagerly await seeing and finding what's out there each weekend. Its not that we need to find things at bargain prices its the fun of discovery! And this past weekend we found a treasure for $2.oo in this beautiful pine wall shelf with the side ends designed with beautiful scroll work in wood.The plsce we've found for it to hang is on the wall of our back sunroom above a chest of drawers which appears to be a perfect match for it.I also found many books to buy for this shelf will easily be filled. Also another excellent find was a banjo for $5.00 which will be a gift for our musician son. see the previous post about this treasure. And also to add to our supply of coffe mugs a fireking Jadite coffee mug for just 10 cents making it a perfect match for the small jadite bowl we got last weekend for just 50 cents. a dragonfly landed on it and stayed while I took its picture. We figured it was meant to be and didn't think we could go wrong by paying the $5.00 asking price for it! So its yours now, and you can pick it up when you come home for a visit this summer. Here are a few details of its appearance:

This theme for this week's Thursday challenge really challenged me a bit today until I was thinking about my most favourite nature sightings, butterflies, moths and dragonflies when I knew what I would post.I ran (mentally) to take its picture.

When a physiotherapist first suggested that I buy myself a cane I searched for one that I could identify with. It has become my friend and companion that helps me with my balance while walking along railroad tracks looking for snapping turtles laying their eggs, while strolling through uneven surfaced grassy meadows looking for butterflies or dragonflies, or when going up or down slopes or little hills going to the river or when walking along my favourite wooded walking trails. The butterfly designs on my walking cane are very lovely. lively and inspiring.
Anbother part of the theme today is jewelery I have two beauties to share with you. I have always loved rhinestones as a child. My first piece of rhinestone jewelery was a yellow and lime green necklace and earring set, a gift from my father. I could not believe that I owned such magnificent beauty when it was given to me. Today my daughter, Riel, has that set. And this treasure below was a gift from my daughter and my grandson for Christmas one year. To me it was a perfect choice and I love it.
Whenever I wear this dragonfly pin(above) it always receives compliments and praise for its lovileness.
A second piece that fits the jewelery , metal, nature theme is this blue jewelled dragonfly, a gift from my granddaughter via my daughter Riel.Isn't it special!
And to keep this post nature themed I will include a picture of a butterfly I saw yesterday. Its a toss up between a meadow fritillary and a silver-bordered fritillary, but i think its the latter,

the garden lighthouse

This cute little garden lighthouse is solar powered and the light on its top revolves when it becomes dark. It is very cute!Hopefully it will scare away the wildlife that visits our garden at night, after dark., like white-tailed deer and raccoons and skunks. One day last week a porcupine strolled through our yard in the daylight hours.! I wasn't home at the time to get its picture.

Hummingbird season, They are everywhere

This female Ruby-throat ed Hummingbird came and perched in front of my window as I was having my morning coffee. It stayed, and stayed and stayed. Aslo while there a male with its red throat came to feed from one of the feeders there. and a beautiful gentle looking Gray Catbird stoped by for a visit. I didn't get a picture of the gray Catbird but it will probably be back. We have a large amount of wild Rose bushes that Catbirds favour and one year a pair nested there. We could hear their" meows" all that summer in our garden as the catbirds perched on our fence daily..

Yard Sale Treasures.

It seems that the theme of these treasure finds today is that of lighthouses. I think they are both delightful!. The first at the top is a hummingbird feeder found by my daughter and grandson. Luckily for me they gave it to me. I have filled it with sugared water and it is now awaiting its first hummingbird visitor. I hope I get to see one soon and maybe get a picture of it.(Success!, no I didn't get a picture but my husband just told me a female hummingbird was feeding at the lighthouse feeder. Great! How wonderful!( Now to catch her feeding there with my camera . The female hummingbird came back!

and the hummie likes the lighthouse feeder.!!!! That is good news. better pictures to come on another day. Stay tuned!
.) The second little treasure find today was of a
model sized lighthouse erected on a driftwood base. This little found treasure I gave to my grandson who loves lighthouses. Looking at it makes me yearn to go beach combing and to find some seaside treasures. I really like the overturned beached boat(dory) on the driftwood shore. Not A Crow, But A Hawkor maybe an Eagle!

At A distsnce I knew it wasn't a crow. It was too big for crow. I took my first picture from my car, then got out and walked further down on the shoulder of the road to get closer.When closer I could see a few markings on its breast and the hook in its beak, and I then knew I was looking at a hawk. This is the first hawk |I have seen for months! I think it is a Red-tailed Hawk.
i think i might have interrupted lunch for as it started to leave I could see the shape of something hanging from its claw.
My best photo was my last one as its beautiful curved wingspan was shown as it was leaving. What a beautiful sighting this was! Another lucky day. I love the half moon shape of its wings!

I sometimes get quite addicted to genealogy and yesterday I located this memorial to my 5th great grandparents; Philip Crouse and Sara Burt. It was in the country at the back of a field alongside the Keswick River so I wore red in acknowledgement of hunting season.Click on the picture to read the story of my 5th. great grandmother's Burt family from Connencitut. quite an interesting memorial stone. Sara Burt gave birth to 18 children!

This gives me a chance to post this picture which fascinated me when I found it It is part of an old sea wall and the force of the incoming and outgoing tides must cause the bigger rock in the middle to go spinning around in the hole causing it to gradually get larger each day of rock and tide rotations.

Orange things for PhotoHunter

When |i first read that the photo hunter theme for this week was 'orange' i decided i would have to go to my photo archives and find some beautiful orange fall leaves, But a trip to the grocery supermarket yesterday quickly changed my mind. I never leave home without my purse size camera. and I loved the beautiful orange colours thatIi found in the produce department such as these oranges above and the orange peppers below.These packaged carrots were orange enough to fit the theme
And I just had to include this picture of this stuffed tiger escaping from its display cage!

The beautiful bright yellow male American Goldfinchare an attractive highlight outside my windows these past few days. The busiest place in Bird Alley these days are the niger seed feeders which attract many Goldfinch snd Pne Siskin.

ONE WORD - stroke for one single impression

Stroke
It wasn't a stroke of luck but one of misfortune.
it almost robbed me of my independence
It knocked me off my feet for a while until I learned to walk again.
I used to feel that my movements were graceful, now I feel clumsy and awkward.
I long to run.
In the stroke of a second it froze my fingers above the keyboard making typing and communication difficult, laboured and error filled.
Like the loving stroking of a cat it warmed my heart revealing to me the treasure I have in my loving and supportive family
Perhaps it saved my life alerting me to a serious blockage I had in an artery
Just one word tells it all

A Mellow Yellow Breakfast

The research benefits of the internet are marvelous and upon encountering the main character in Jeffrey Archer's novel, As the Crow Flies, eating 'Scotch Eggs' on more than one occasion, my husband became curious. The photos included here are the results of his curiosity and the delicious breakfast he served me yesterday morning. Basically Scotch Eggs consist of a hard boiled egg in the center of sausage meat. On Wikipedia's information page , it is mentioned that it is fried dish, but we chose to bake them and they were delicious! A recipe for baked Scotch Eggs can be found here.
And of course a meal isn't complete without a hot cup of tea or coffee. And for this mellow yellow day, I enjoyed my breakfast tea served in a 1930's original yellow Harlequin cup and saucer.

Looking up along King Street in the old, port city of Saint John, NB, you can see this facade of old brick buildings. With the influx of Loyalists in 1784, Saint John became a city in 1785 and holds the honour of being the oldest incorporated city in Canada.

Moccasins: for Saturday Footwear Fever

For cosy, indoor comfort during the wintertime, my favourite daytime footwear are these North American moccasins . I had purchased them in Northern Ontario in the early 2000's. The beautiful bead work is a characteristic feature of this sort of leather footwear.
These little, miniature ones, shown to the left, are much older. They were found at a flea market and the elderly lady selling them, had owned them as a child. The ruler used to show their size measures in inches. This second miniature pair had been given to me by an Ojibway family from Mani- toulan Island, honouring our friendship when we had lived as neighbours in Toronto.

A Skelton Key: A Simple Thing for Thematic Photography

The other day we wanted to have a duplicate of a key made, and of all the shapes and designs of templates available, a match could not be found to ours at that particular counter. Perhaps there's not much today that beats the simplicity of a skelton key. One size fits all and you could probably have purchased one in a hardware store.

I decided to check it out to see if that fact held true, that the one key would fit in all and so I tried it in three of the doors in my more than a century old house. And it did!

Amber Rhinestones; for Mellow Yellow Monday and Macro Monday

Its fluted yellowish striped wings
studded with amber rhinestones
captured light from the window landscape
as my camera harvested its beautyI don't know how long its been in my sewing box, or even where it came from, but I suspect its a left over treasure, a tiny two-inch souvenir from my antique period when I had a little shop for a couple of summers. While lying amid my sewing things its semi transparency can be seen.

When held up to the full light it takes on a trans- formation of beauty, changing its appear -ance with the direction and intensity of light that it encounters and absorbs.

An Eyes in Wood Surprise; for Thematic Photographic 33

Do you ever get the feeling you are being watched? Its quite a surprise when you discover the eyes!! And then beak! And then you see the Owl that you seek; embedded in the knots and wood grain of a little trunk that I have.The Owl in the trunk is actually the second Owl we have found in our home; for we have been aware of another lurking in the wood knots on the end of our kitchen cupboards for many years now.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered just last week it had been fleshed out by someone with a marker! That was a surprise too!

Mellow Yellow in My Kitchen: for Mellow Yellow Monday

I have been looking forward to posting to this new meme, "Mellow Yellow Monday," and while preparing my morning cup of tea I was thinking of possible pictures to post. Maybe a field of yellow dandelions would be refreshing to look at for it would be in such contrast to the view outside my window this morning of a cold, white, world with the snow still coming down. While thinking I was also looking around my kitchen and noting some of my favourite old 'yellow' things I had surrounding me. On the microwave is a yellow glass pedestal fruit bowl with pears and bananas in it and in front of the bowl a pottery three-in-one sort of planter, filled with crayons awaiting the visit of some little ones who love to draw and colour. The antique 'string holder' yellow cat is a special favourite of mine. If I put a ball of string in the back of it the string would hang out of its mouth. On the wall by the door is a visual memory of the years I lived on the Alberta prairies in the form of a painting of golden, yellow canola fields which I had painted in 1993.
Another favourite piece, on top of my refrigerator, deserves mention too while these decorative cows graze contentedly around this old antique, butter crock, which is now used as a catchall for this and that.Just a quick look in the dining room at two other favourite antique pieces will complete this post. Above a bowl with matching candlestick holders and to the left I have included a showy cream and sugar set which has a geometric black and white border.And for a final view from my kitchen, this one being out my window. As we are in the midst of a winter storm this sidewalk snow blower passing by gives me yet another glimpse of yellow to share.

Found discarded many years ago in the remains of the rubble and boards of an old farm, this would have been the cover to an old wooden tool box, or perhaps just a storage box for personal posses -sions. Once it was attached to the box by a leather strap and nails, today only one strap remains. It is old and aged.
If you enlarge this photo above you can see the same pattern of 5 nails used to hold the strap in place to the upper left of the wooden cover as well. The leather strap is missing but the nails have remained.
