The Wood Pile: for Sepia Scenes

Our older home has three brick chimneys sitting on top of its gabled roof but two of them have been blocked, even before we bought the house, as they are no longer used. When our home was first built over a century ago, it would have been heated by wood but today we heat with oil.
Wood heating though has not gone out of fashion and homes on three sides of us still use wood as a source of heat as well as oil. It is not an uncommon sight to see a woodpile in a dooryard waiting to be used during the cold winter months to come.

'pretend' Scary: for Photo Hunter

Well, o.k., this isn't really very scary, rather its just 'pretend' scary for we are getting very close to that time of year when costumed ghosts and goblins knock on your door and shout 'trick or treat', and many Halloween decorations tend to be a bit on the scary side. This witch actually spends most of the year tucked away in a trunk and only makes an annual appearance each year during the Halloween season. With her hair flying in the wind, she rides her fabric broom over the colourful fall fabric hills beneath her feet.

Scenes from my Window: for Sepia Scenes

Sepia Scenes is a new meme hosted by Mary/the Teach and it offers the opportunity to share with others beautiful scenes in sepia tones. For my first posting within this theme I thought I would highlight scenes seen from my window.
This is the time of year when the drop in tempera -tures and changing weather conditions often finds me looking out the window checking on the weather and the beautiful fall foliage before venturing out. This morning when I first looked out the temperature was at 0 C degrees and it was raining.
Looking out my kitchen window I see our tall, full sized statue is still looking good in her yearly Hallowe'en role doubling as a witch.From another window I see our garden cherubs are still resting on the side rails of our small bridge which crosses a sometimes water filled pretend creek. They are often kept company in the nightime hours by White-tailed Deer and Raccoons.
And lastly, another view from another window tells me that our optimistic, green, ceramic cat is still casting a hopeful eye upwards toward the bird feeder above.

N is for Nib: ABC Wednesday Round #3

We have always written with a 'pen'. In the western world the pen's most common form was originally a quill from our feathered friends. Geese were popular. The quill had to be sliced to hold ink, and sharpened to write; then resharpened until pencil-like it wore out. That's what a penknife was for.
With the industrial revolution steel pens (nibs) were invented. These needed a pen holder, the shaft into which the pen was inserted. Still, unlike the man of steel, they wore out or clogged up with ink. But these were cheap and the penholder fancy.
Gold became the pen of choice. Tipped with iridium, it wore in, not out. And the shaft became a fountain, a ready pocket supply of ink. Ergo the 'fountain pen'.As language changed the replaceable ends came to be called 'nibs', and 'pen holder' reserved for the fancy desk resting place.But the nib, shaped to match the writer or the task, like music pens, stubs, accounting nibs, etc, is the pen's heart. N is for nib.

A Walk Along a Woodland Trail: for Monochrome Monday

This is a beautiful walking trail that I sometimes take on my morning walks. Within this huge stand of old Pines and Cedars there are often Chickadees in the high branches that accompany me as I walk along, listening to their cheerful naming song. "chickadee dee dee dee".Part of this walking trail borders along a river and one day I saw two young fawn on the opposite shore. Driving My Shadow Car Home: for Shadow Shot Sunday

This shadow of my car, seemingly stretching out to the middle of the field alongside the highway, was taken a couple of years ago when I was returning home on a late December afternoon. I was so delighted with the shadow that was accompanying me as I was driving along that I had stopped the car and had gotten out to take this picture. The strong sun on the horizon was having lots of shadow making fun!

A Full Moon in a Cloudy Night Sky: for Skywatch Friday

The beautiful full moon called me outside last evening as clouds drifted through the sky, at times obscuring it from my view.
